A 12-year-old girl died after eating tainted beef in Mbai Farm Village, Kiminini Ward, while seven other people are receiving treatment at Kijana Wamalwa Referral Hospital in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.
The deceased’s parents claim that they were not aware of the meat’s possible danger when they received it from a neighbor on Thursday.
The girl’s mother, Mary Wafula, described how her kids ate the food with great anticipation but became ill a few hours later.
“The son of our neighbor offered me some beef on Thursday. I made sukuma wiki for lunch because my kids had been hankering after meat,” she told Citizen Digital.
“All five of my kids began having terrible diarrhea by midnight. I gave them some medication on Saturday, but by Sunday, one of them had died.”
Patrick Wafula, the father, talked about the terrifying experience of seeing his daughter pass away from the disease.
“Despite my best efforts, I was unable to support her during the night. She was already gone when I hurried her to Kiminini,” he remarked. “The other four kids are still being treated at the hospital. I received an injection as well. The meat must have been the cause—it was awful.”
Mary Mukhwana, a local village elder, verified the occurrence and said that security and health officials are looking into it to find out how many people were impacted.
“Several children are in the hospital, and one child has passed away. Everyone who ate the meat reported experiencing stomach distress, and it was devoured by about four homes. Anyone who may have consumed the meat is being advised to get medical help right away.”
Locals are demanding that the source of the tainted beef be thoroughly investigated and that health officials move swiftly to prevent more deaths.
