As search and rescue operations continue, the bodies of a man and a woman, both thought to be in their late 20s to early 30s, were found on the Ethiopian side.
The dead were recovered just hours after Kenyan officials were granted access to the Ethiopian side, where the incident is believed to have taken place on Saturday.
In a previous statement, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated, “Today, the Kenyan team, working with their Ethiopian counterparts, accessed the area of the incident and are currently searching for the missing persons and 15 boats.”
Earlier, CS Murkomen announced that Kenyan officials had been given permission to look for missing Kenyans in the region of an attack occurred in Todonyang, which is located along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
According to the CS, the access was granted after diplomatic talks between Ethiopian and Kenyan authorities on Tuesday in Nairobi.
He claimed that Ethiopia gave the Kenyan team complete permission to look for the missing on their side.
He promised that the administration is working with the Ethiopian government to bring the area back to normal while also making every effort to find the missing people.
A group of Kenyan fisherman were attacked by suspected Ethiopian Dassanech militia on February 22, 2025, when they were out on a regular fishing expedition on Lake Turkana.
Murkomen pointed out that late at night, news of the incident began to reach Kenyan authorities because of inadequate contact on the Ethiopian end.
He added that Turkana County’s local security authorities made a hasty attempt to determine the extent of the strike right away.
According to him, the Todonyang GSU camp now has a reporting desk where locals may notify missing people.
