    Kenya Mourns Viral Comedian

Kenyan comedian Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as KK Mwenyewe, has died after a short illness. He passed away on Monday, July 14, 2025, at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital according to an announcement made by fellow comedian and collaborator Kafengo.
    Kafengo posted on Facebook:

“We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki, AKA Mr KK Mwenyewe. He passed on last night while receiving medical attention at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital. During these hard times we ask for your support and prayers. May his soul rest in peace.”

Kariuki gained national recognition in 2022 for his satirical impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, often wearing oversized suits to mirror the former leader’s appearance. His viral content, especially on TikTok and Facebook, had him with over 1.1 million TikTok followers and 412,000 Facebook followers, with his last skit posted on July 4, 2025.

Apart from political satire, Kariuki’s content covered various Kenyan social archetypes, including teachers and ordinary mwananchi. His deadpan delivery and relatable humor made him one of the most watched and shared digital comedians in the country.

While still a student at Kisii University, Kariuki’s viral skits got him featured on national media outlets and he appeared on several TV shows. His popularity also got him support from Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja who reportedly cleared his university tuition arrears

At the time of publishing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whose image Kariuki frequently impersonated, had not issued a statement on the comedian’s death.

Details of the illness that led to Kariuki’s death are still unknown. But photos of the comedian in hospital have been circulating on social media.RIP
