Blog Activist Ndiangui Kinyangia Confirms Hiding to Avoid Arrest.
Blogger and political activist Ndiangui Kinyangia has confirmed that he went into hiding to avoid an arrest, contrary to widespread claims of abduction and has been criticized by civil society actors and public institutions.
According to a statement issued by the family’s lawyer, Advocate Wahome Thuku, the blogger contacted a family member on Tuesday evening, July 1, 2025 and told them where he was and that he was fine. The statement added that Mr. Kinyangia had taken the step after learning that DCI officers had visited his residence and taken some items when he was not around.
“I want to inform Kenyans that Mr. Ndiangui who went missing last week has contacted the family and he is well, healthy and safe,” Advocate Thuku said. “He contacted a family member from an unknown location.” Thuku also said DCI conducted a raid on the blogger’s residence and the matter was reported at Kinoo Police Station.
Public concern over the blogger’s alleged disappearance had intensified after he posted the June 25 protest itinerary on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account. Civil rights organizations and members of the public accused the National Police Service of forced disappearance. A court order was later issued directing the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja and the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin to produce the blogger in court by June 30, 2025.

Now that it’s confirmed Mr. Kinyangia is not in state custody, various people including Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr. Korir Sing’Oei have responded. In a public statement, Dr. Sing’Oei said, “Sad that a law enforcement officer has been lynched and prejudged,” referring to the premature criticism of the investigative agencies.Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi also condemned Mr. Kinyangia on July 2, 2025 through his verified X account. Mwangi called Mr. Kinyangia’s actions misleading and criminal saying: “What Ndiangui Kinyangia has done is wrong and criminal. An entire country was fighting for his release and praying for his safety thinking he was abducted but all along he was hiding. Shame on him and his family for misleading an entire nation.”
Mr. Kinyangia is expected to appear in court on Thursday, July 3, 2025 to respond to any pending matters including the earlier summons.
No statement has been issued by DCI or Office of the Inspector General of Police on the charges against the blogger.
