Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Matungu MP Peter Oscar Nabulindo, and former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa have been summoned for questioning by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The summons were issued after the clashes observed over the weekend at the burial of a former chief in Mayoni Ward, Kakamega County, which resulted in numerous injuries, including that of a police officer.
The head of the Kakamega Region DCI summoned the three to appear at the agency’s office on Tuesday (today) to clarify their involvement in the clashes.
This came after violent clashes between their supporters at the funeral, which resulted in millions of shillings worth of property damage.
During the incident, chaos ensued, resulting in injuries to several attendees, including a police officer and other security personnel who intervened to reestablish order. As a result of the incident, some individuals were left bleeding, while the injured officer was aided by his fellow officers.
As rival factions hurled chairs at each other, the situation quickly spiraled out of control, exacerbating the distress of the bereaved family, who were left to contend with additional damages.
After the incident, Nabulindo and Echesa ended up in a rather unusual situation when the family of the deceased returned a cow and the monetary contributions that the two had provided during his funeral.
The family stated that it was highly inappropriate for the politicians to come to the funeral, where they were expected to honor the deceased, only to disturb the occasion by trying to seize control of the proceedings.
Additionally, the family expressed that they were returning the gifts to provide a lesson to other politicians who frequently interrupted funerals.
