Ferdinand Waititu, the former governor of Kiambu, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. This comes a day after he was convicted in a corruption case involving Sh588 million, along with his wife and four other individuals.
Susan Wangari, his spouse, has received a one-year prison sentence along with a default fine of Sh500,000.
Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzyoki of Millimani has imposed a 10-year prohibition on Waititu, his wife, and the co-accused from holding any public office.
Alongside Waititu, the other co-accused are businessman Charles Mbuthia Chege, his spouse Beth Wangechi, and Luka Mwangi Wahinya, who previously held the position of Kiambu Roads Chief Officer.
They were convicted for their involvement in a corrupt scheme aimed at defrauding the county government of millions of shillings.
Former Kiambu County Chief Officer Roads and Transport Engineer Luka Mwangi Wahinya was also sentenced. For the offence of misusing his position by granting a multi-million tender to an unqualified firm, he has received a fine of Sh21 million and will serve seven years in prison if he defaults.
Charles Chege, a businessman and director of Testimony Enterprises Limited, which fraudulently received a tender from the Kiambu County Government, has been fined Sh295 million or sentenced to nine years in prison.
Beth Wangechi, his spouse, has been penalized with a fine of Sh1.4 million, and if she does not pay this amount, she will be imprisoned for two years and four months.
