Former Nyandarua Governor Daniel Waithaka Mwangi was sentenced to two years in prison by the Nyahururu Anti-Corruption Courts for procurement irregularities and official abuse. He had the choice of paying a Ksh1 million fine.
In a ruling on Thursday, Chief Magistrate Hezekiah Keago sentenced the former governor to two years in prison or a Ksh500,000 fine for willfully breaking procurement laws, and an additional two years in prison or a Ksh500,000 fine for abusing his position.
The former Governor was sentenced with Grace Wanjiru Gitonga, the former County Executive Committee Member for Water, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources, according to a statement released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) on Thursday, March 20.
Gitonga was given a two-year term or a Ksh500,000 fine for starting a project without doing any planning beforehand. Additionally, she received a second two-year term or a fine of Ksh500,000 for willfully breaking procurement laws.
The former governor and his CECM were found guilty of a crime they committed on April 30, 2014, while serving as public servants in charge of overseeing public property.
Without a procurement plan, they illegally hired an engineering consultancy business for the 2013–2014 fiscal year.
Additionally, the former governor was found guilty of office misuse on March 13, 2025, after the court determined that he fraudulently granted a benefit to the consulting firm in April 2014 by using his authority.
Waithaka joins former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and former Samburu County Governor Moses Lenolkulaal as the third governor convicted of graft charges in the last two years.
Waititu was found guilty of improperly awarding tenders last month and was given a sentence of 12 years in prison or a Ksh53.5 million fine.
Waititu was also given a five-year prison term or a Ksh2.5 million punishment, with a Ksh51 million obligatory fee.
