Gachagua Accuses Govt of Backing Maina Njenga to Destabilize Mt. Kenya.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of backing former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga in efforts to disrupt events in the Mount Kenya region.
He alleged that Njenga’s actions, including an incident on Saturday where Njenga stormed an event attended by Gachagua’s wife, were intended to intimidate him and undermine his influence in the region.
Gachagua’s visit to Laikipia on Sunday highlighted his ongoing criticism of President William Ruto’s administration.
Accompanied by allies from a budding political movement called Itathi (derived from the Mau Mau liberation phrase for “servants of the community”), Gachagua vowed to lead Mount Kenya into a government that respects and works for its people.
His allies have expressed strong disapproval of Maina Njenga’s rising presence in the region, viewing it as a deliberate attempt to create discord.

Community Concerns and Abductions
The tension in the region extends beyond political rivalry. Leaders and residents in Laikipia have raised concerns about the recent wave of abductions.
Notably, Simon Mwangi Layani, the former chair of Laikipia North Constituency Development Fund, has been missing since October last year. Local leaders have urged President Ruto to address these abductions and ensure the safe return of those affected.
As Gachagua solidifies his support base in Mount Kenya, political analysts note that President Ruto’s popularity in the region has diminished following Gachagua’s impeachment. Analysts suggest that time will be a critical factor in determining whether Ruto can regain the trust of the Mount Kenya electorate ahead of the 2027 elections.
