Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been given 48 hours by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga to repent for allegedly accepting Ksh. 10 million in exchange for voting against him during his Senate impeachment trial.
The Senator denied the accusations, claiming they were libelous and detrimental to his reputation, through his attorney Wycliff Nyabuto.
He maintained that Gachagua’s comments, which were purportedly uttered in Machakos on March 2, had a greater impact because they were extensively shared on social media and in the mainstream media.
The demand letter stated that “because of your substantial online following, the dissemination of the defamatory material against our client has, and continues to extend beyond Kenya.”
Wamatinga further claimed that the comments severely embarrassed and hurt him by portraying him as dishonest and politically compromised. Additionally, he maintains that no one ever asked him to vote against Gachagua or gave him money.
“Senator wa kwangu alipewa 10 million shillings akaniuza, hawa wenu ndio walinifunika uchi from Ukambani,” the senator claims Gachagua added.
According to Wamatinga, these remarks suggested that he lacked political integrity and was unable to carry out his responsibilities.
The senator has threatened to take legal action right away if Gachagua does not apologize publicly by the end of business on March 9.
“Take note that if we do not receive compliance in terms of this demand notice by the close of business on March 9, our instructions are to move to court to protect our client’s interests without any further notice or reference,” stated Nyabuto.
