Douglas Kanja, the Inspector General of Police, has voiced his displeasure with claims that police officers had been paid to carry out their jobs.
When his kids show him footage of police officers who were arrested for accepting bribes, the Inspector General says he feels embarrassed.
In a video that the Star was able to view, Inspector General Kanja urged police officers to refrain from corruption, claiming that it damages the service’s reputation.
The IG claims that certain police personnel accept payments and pretend to be bringing them to the highest levels of government.
This taints the top leadership, and since it will be considered that the money is corruption money, they are unable to better their lifestyle.
“Every time I learn that a traffic cop has been arrested for accepting bribes, I am never thrilled. Do you feel the same way? When my kids bring me footage of police officers accepting bribes, I’m not pleased. It is urgent that they send them. When the kids question you if you know the criminals who are allegedly taking bribes from the top employers, it is unjust,” IG stated.
“My kids may eventually believe that their father is also guilty, and the law may soon catch up with him.” However, the father may have borrowed money.
According to the police chief, for officers to operate in a respectable atmosphere, corruption in the police force must stop.
According to him, police personnel who are also parents will be able to educate their kids and live honorably if corruption is eradicated.
“Who wants to expose their kids to corruption or use money obtained through corruption to educate them? Don’t cause trouble in your houses; use your money to educate your kids,” IG Kanja continued.
To eradicate corruption in their numerous institutions, police personnel must work together, according to the police inspector general.
In support of the planned process of the EACC’s examination of the systems, policies, procedures, and work practices in the National Police Service, which was launched last Monday, February 10, 2025, Kanja held a conference meeting with all Regional and Formation Commanders on Monday.
In accordance with Article 244(b) of the Kenyan Constitution, the IG reaffirmed that the exercise that the EACC is to carry out is a stimulation rather than an inquiry.
The National Police Service is required by the article to uphold and encourage accountability and openness while also preventing corruption.
The IG added that in an attempt to enhance service delivery and reduce corruption.
