Kalonzo Musyoka, the wiper leader, has stated that he is open to meeting with both ODM Leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto. But before a new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is appointed, the conversation will solely concentrate on reaching an agreement.
Kalonzo, a principal in the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition, emphasized the importance of appointing impartial electoral officials and agencies in a letter to the two leaders.
“Just to be clear, if the UDA/ODM Alliance moves forward with appointing the IEBC chairperson and commissioners without the opposition’s active involvement, this will be perceived as an attempt to create a partisan electoral body and rig the upcoming elections,” the letter stated in part.
The former vice president clarified that the agreements made during the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) process included these consultations.
Kalonzo contends that since Raila’s ODM inked a partnership deal with the ruling United Democratic Alliance on March 7, 2025, they are no longer able to claim to be speaking for the opposition.
The seven positions, which have been unfilled since January 2023, are presently being interviewed by the IEBC selection team, which is chaired by Nelson Makanda.
The electoral board has been unable to carry out important tasks, including conducting at least five by-elections in different constituencies and completing long-overdue boundary delimitation, due to the lack of a chairperson and at least three commissioners.
