Kenya Meteorological Department Issues Weather Advisory for 7 Regions Ahead of Christmas
Rainfall Forecast
The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised Kenyans to prepare for occasional rainfall across various regions for the next five days, from December 18 to December 25.
Regions Affected by Rainfall
The following regions are expected to experience rainfall:
- Highlands East of the Rift Valley: Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi.
- Rainfall will be moderate to heavy, starting in the afternoon after sunny and cloudy intervals in the morning and continuing until dusk.
- Highlands West of the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin: Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, and Nakuru.
- These areas will experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, with a warning for potential floods.
- South Rift Valley: Narok, Kericho, and Bomet.
- Western and Northwestern Counties: Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
- Coastal Counties: Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River.
- These regions are expected to experience moderate rainfall.
Temperature Advisory
The department has also issued warnings about extreme temperature fluctuations during the forecast period.
Cold Nights
- Counties Affected: Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi.
- Night temperatures are expected to drop to 7°C during the first three days of the forecast, rising to 11°C for the remaining period.
Hot Days
- Counties Affected by High Daytime Temperatures: Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet.
- Daytime temperatures are projected to reach up to 36°C.
- Other Counties with Hot Days: Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale.

December 9–15, 2024: Weather Review
- Rainfall: Recorded in the southeastern lowlands and coastal areas.
- Daytime Temperatures: Increased in most parts of the country, although stations like Voi, Malindi, and Meru reported slight cooling.
- Nighttime Temperatures: Increased across the country, with only minor decreases in a few coastal areas.
