During a hearing concerning the conflict between the government and victims of sexual violence from the 2007-2008 post-election period, a hacker stunned the court, lawyers, and reporters with shocking images.
The submissions from attorneys representing the opposing parties were being closely monitored by Justices Daniel Musinga, Francis Tuiyott, and George Odunga when pornographic images were uploaded, causing a suspension of the proceedings.
The President of the court, Justice Musinga, expressed his disgust at the inappropriate and distressing images exhibited.
He stated that it was disturbing and unsettling for the perpetrator of the attack to commit the unthinkable while the court was addressing a case of sexual violence.
After the session ended abruptly, the court ruled that only lawyers could use the new link. The court was concerned that the hacker might compromise the Zoom system once more.
The judges were considering an appeal submitted by seven victims in partnership with the Coalition on Violence Against Women, the Independent Medico-Legal Unit, the International Commission of Jurists, and Physicians for Human Rights.
The Attorney General, Minister for Medical Services, Director of Public Prosecution, Independent Policing Oversight Authority and Inspector General of Police were all named in the lawsuit they filed.
Willis Otieno, their lawyer, contended that the authorities did not investigate or prosecute those responsible for Sexual and Gender Based-Violence (SGBV) in the aftermath of the election-related clashes.
The court was informed that the police had abused all seven victims.
He stated that Weldon Korir had not provided justice for all the victims documented by various sources, including the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC).
He contended that the Judge made another mistake by concluding that compensation would only be given to those who had experienced abuse at the hands of state officials.
Simultaneously, the lawyer stated that the government should have provided psycho-social support and apprehended the perpetrators.
