During an operation in Kenscoff, southeast of the capital Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday, a Kenyan police officer serving in the Multinational Security Mission, which is supported by the United Nations, was hurt while fighting violent gangs in Haiti.
According to a statement from the mission’s spokesperson, Jack Ombaka, the unnamed officer was hurt in the Belot area and taken to Aspen Hospital, where he is receiving treatment “in stable condition.”
A Kenyan mission officer was shot dead by gangs during an operation in the town of Pont Sonde in the western Segur-Savien region on February 23, less than a month ago.
Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai was the first Kenyan to be murdered during the mission, which began deploying last June. Last Tuesday, his body was returned home.
To date, Kenya has deployed over 800 troops to Haiti, including over 1,000 officers from other nations, like Jamaica, Guatemala, and El Salvador, who are assisting Haiti’s national police.
According to U.N. statistics, gang-related violence in the Caribbean country claimed the lives of over 5,601 people last year, 1,000 more than in 2023.
