KNEC: Technical Timetable: June-July 2024 (PDF Download) – Guidelines and Instructions for Examinations

General Instructions

The exam schedule specifies the allotted time for each paper, and we will not provide additional time. If there is a discrepancy, the time on the question paper should be considered accurate. Visually impaired candidates will be required to adhere to the time specified on their papers, with no additional time permitted.

Unless otherwise specified in special instructions, any time allocated for reading questions is included in the total time. The examinations will commence promptly at 8:00 a.m.

Candidates are advised to consult sections 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 of this timetable, which delineate the regulations that govern their conduct. Supervisors must verify that candidates have written their names and index numbers on the answer documents before collecting them.

The instructions specify the number of questions candidates must answer. Candidates must delete excess responses if they answer more questions than necessary; only the initial set of mandatory questions will receive marking.

Guidelines for Candidates, Teachers, and Supervisors

Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that candidates and instructors understand these instructions. Teachers should review these guidelines with students and inform them about the consequences of misconduct or irregularities. Candidates are required to adhere to these guidelines meticulously.

Candidate General Instructions

Candidates must arrive in the examination room five minutes prior to the scheduled start time. If a candidate is tardy, they are required to provide the supervisor with a satisfactory explanation.

A candidate who arrives more than 30 minutes after the scheduled time will not receive a paper unless there are exceptional circumstances. Candidates must promptly inform the supervisor if they receive an incorrect exam paper or if the necessary materials are absent.

The first page of each answer document must contain the candidate’s name, index number, and paper name of the paper, in addition to adhering to any general instructions provided on the exam paper.

The index number must be indicated on each sheet. Write your answers on both sides of the paper without using the margins, and start each section of a query on a new line.

After each answer, a vacant line should be left, and the question number should be written in the left-hand margin to correspond with the numbering on the question paper.

You should designate pencils for diagrams and use either black or blue ink to write answers. Candidates are required to provide the requisite mathematical and drawing instruments.

To prevent time wastage and guarantee that all inquiries are satisfactorily addressed, responses must be succinct and pertinent to the inquiries posed.

Candidates are required to arrange their answer sheets in the correct order, ensure that their index number is present on each sheet, attach them in the left-hand corner, and submit them unfolded to the supervisor after the exam. The Council should be informed of any withdrawal from the exam before the commencement of the examinations.

Candidates Are Advised

Special permission from the superintendent is required to exit the examination room before the conclusion of the allotted time. Any candidate who is permitted to exit the room is prohibited from removing any question papers.

The candidates are required to ensure that their responses are not visible to others and refrain from engaging in any form of communication during the examination.

Candidates are prohibited from possessing any unauthorized materials in the exam room, including books, notes, or papers.

Only authorized materials and the official question paper are permissible. Slide rules must not contain any additional data, and mathematical tables must be those provided by the Kenya National Examinations Council without additional notes.

Incorrect question papers must be promptly returned to the supervisor. The examination room prohibits the removal of any writing paper, regardless of its condition. If the official answer paper is not submitted, any preliminary work should be completed on it and left on the desk.

It is a severe irregularity to engage in disorderly conduct or cause disturbances in the vicinity of the examination venue. The possession of mobile phones is prohibited in the exam room and center, and their possession will result in the cancellation of results.

Administrative penalties for irregularities

Sections 27 to 40 of the KNEC Act 2012 specify penalties for examination irregularities. A candidate who is discovered cheating will have their entire subject results canceled and will receive a “Y” overall.

If any center is discovered to have pervasive irregularities, all examination results for that center will be void. Severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines, are imposed for violations such as disclosing exam content, damaging materials, or impersonation.

For example,

  • Unauthorized access to exam materials may result in a fine of up to two million rupees or a prison sentence of up to ten years.
  • Damaged examination materials may result in imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to five million naira.
  • Impersonation may result in a fine of up to two million shillings or imprisonment for up to one year, as well as a potential three-year prohibition from Council examinations.
