List of List of C Plain Teaching Courses in Kenya

To become a teacher in Kenya, one must satisfy specific educational requirements and register with the Teacher Service Commission (TSC).

The TSC serves two functions: registering qualified teachers and assessing the education and training standards of those pursuing a career in teaching.

If an individual has a certificate, diploma, or degree in a teaching field, the TSC is required to register them as a teacher. Nevertheless, which teaching courses are accessible to students who have earned a C-level in Kenya?

In Kenya, to enroll in a university for a degree program, a grade that exceeds C (plain) is generally required. However, a C-level is sufficient to enroll in a diploma program at a technical training center, college, or university.

Students who have earned a C plain grade are eligible to enroll in a Diploma in Education, Early Childhood Development Education, or Special Needs Education.

The primary obstacle is that a diploma and a C-level may not suffice to entitle an individual to teach at the secondary school level in Kenya.

There are a number of opportunities for students with a C (plain) to enroll in teaching courses. The following programs are available at Kenyan institutions of higher education for individuals who aspire to become primary school teachers:

    1. Diploma in Adult Education

The Diploma in Adult Education aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to effectively facilitate adult and continuing education.

This course is particularly well-suited for individuals who have a C-minus or are interested in disciplines that are associated with community development and adult education.

In addition to teaching adult education, the program equips students with the skills necessary to assume a variety of roles, including senior staff at community training centers, in-service training personnel, and positions within disciplined forces.

    Entry Requirements:

    • A minimum of a C in the KCSE is required.

    2. Early Childhood Development Education Diploma

To instruct in early childhood learning environments, it is necessary to enroll in an educational program that focuses on early childhood development.

The Diploma in Early Childhood Development Education is a top-tier teaching course for C students, comparable to the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education.

This program instructs students on the effective use of mathematics, literacy, music, and the visual arts to engage children. It also equips individuals with the ability to engage in social interactions with young children, address their requirements, and navigate linguistic obstacles.

    Entry Requirements:

    • A mean grade of C (plain) at the KCSE.

Furthermore, the TSC mandates that diploma students possess an ECDE certificate from KNEC and a C ordinary at KCSE to be eligible for employment.

    3. Education (Arts) Diploma

Students can become art teachers in secondary, primary, and post-secondary institutions, both public and private, with the help of the Diploma in Education (Arts) program.

The program covers all essential educational components necessary for the teaching profession, specifically focusing on subjects commonly taught at secondary and mid-level colleges. In their respective fields of expertise, students acquire the ability to devise, prepare, and implement educational curricula.

Students are required to choose a minimum of two specializations or teaching subjects, which may include English, Kiswahili, History, Geography, Business Studies, Math, Christian Religious Education, and Agriculture.

In order to work for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), students must have a mean KCSE grade of C, with a minimum of a C in English and a D+ in mathematics.

    4. Science Diploma in Education

The Diploma in Education (Science) is a program that emphasizes science subjects, while the Diploma in Education (Arts) has comparable objectives. Graduates are eligible to instruct science subjects at primary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions.

Additionally, they may engage in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of curricula. Students are required to select a minimum of two specializations or teaching subjects, including physics, biology, chemistry, computer studies, home science, and agriculture.

Admission to this diploma typically requires a C (plain) at KCSE, whereas the TSC requires a minimum of a C (plain) in both English and mathematics.

    5. Primary Teacher Education Diploma

Students who aspire to become primary school teachers can acquire the practical and theoretical knowledge essential for the teaching profession through the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education. The program prioritizes the development of research skills, curriculum development, and effective communication in the field of child education.

The prerequisites for this diploma may differ among various institutions. In general, a C (plain) at KCSE is required, with a minimum of a C (plain) in mathematics, English, Kiswahili, one science subject (biology, chemistry, or physics), and one humanities subject (history, geography, or religious education).

    6. Special Needs Education Diploma

The Diploma in Special Needs Education prepares students to instruct children with special needs by fostering an understanding of the psychology and demands of these students, which include those with physical, learning, and mental impairments.

Autism, emotional and behavioral difficulties, hearing impairments, deafblindness, intellectual disabilities, gifted and talented disabilities, visual impairments, physical disabilities, and learning disabilities are among the areas that the program can address, whether comprehensively or specializedly.

Conversely, it may concentrate on inclusive education. To enroll, one needs a minimum grade of C at KCSE, with a minimum of C in English and C in mathematics for science-based courses, or D in mathematics for non-science-based courses.

    7. Certificate in Teacher Education

The Diploma in Teacher Education program equips students with the necessary skills to become effective educators, capable of instructing high school or tertiary college students. The program aims to equip students with the necessary skills to adapt to Kenya’s evolving educational needs and to give them a thorough understanding of their subject matter.

For admission to this course, a student must have a mean grade of C (plain) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Furthermore, the student must maintain a minimum of a C in two of their specialization subjects. In the alternative, students who have a KCSE mean grade of C (minus) and a P1 certificate or a certificate in any field from a post-secondary institution are eligible to enroll.

Students can enroll in a teaching course at many Kenyan higher education institutions if they obtain a mean grade of C (plain) in the KCSE.

Nevertheless, students who earn a C (ordinary) are only eligible for a diploma course, as a C+ (plus) is the minimum requirement for a bachelor’s degree at the university level. For students with a C, the Diploma in Early Childhood Development Education and the Diploma in Adult Education are suitable courses.

In addition to providing students with the education necessary to become teachers, this program also equips them with the adaptability and expertise required to meet the constantly evolving requirements of the Kenyan education system.
