Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji claims that President William Ruto is more “desperate” for Raila Odinga to win the African Union Chairmanship this weekend than Raila is.
Mukunji, in an interview with Citizen TV on Friday, February 14, noted that Raila continues to represent a “threat” to President Ruto in the upcoming general election.
Mukunji noted that Raila obtaining the AU position would provide Ruto with relief, as it would mean the president would not contend against a formidable rival in the 2027 general elections.
Nevertheless, Mukunji voiced his endorsement of the ex-Prime Minister, labeling him a leader who implements his tactics accurately and who would greatly benefit the continent if he were to succeed.
As preparations for the AUC elections are in progress, 55 Heads of State from African Union member states, including President William Ruto, have gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the elections.
The former Prime Minister is in contention for the seat, facing off against Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Yousouff (MAY) and Madagascar’s Richard J. Randriamandrato.
In the event that Raila secures the position, his responsibilities will include overseeing the Commission’s administration and finances while advancing the goals of the African Union.
Local leaders, such as ex-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have shown hopefulness regarding Odinga’s candidacy for the continent’s highest position.
Gachagua made a statement on his X account Friday morning expressing confidence in Raila and affirming that there was no doubt about his commitment to championing the African people and his global perspective.
