Outgoing officials from the Amani National Congress (ANC) have reassured their party’s supporters that they should not be concerned about a potential merger with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Issa Timamy, Lamu Governor and ANC Deputy Party Leader, disclosed at a meeting held at the Bomas of Kenya that the merger was strategic in light of Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi’s presidential bid in 2032.
He remarked, “Let me put it this way: we are pursuing this direction because we are focused on 2032.”
Mudavadi’s allies claim that their major merger decision was influenced by succession politics, leading to an agreement with UDA aimed at ensuring President Ruto’s re-election in 2027, with UDA subsequently supporting Musalia Mudavadi for the presidency in 2032.
The Emuhaya Lawmaker and outgoing Secretary General, Omboko Milemba, stated that the road to 2032 is difficult and that merging with UDA would ease the path for the soft-spoken Mudavadi.
Omboko informed the NDC, “Our focus is on 2032. We made this decision because the road to that year is rough; don’t worry, as we are looking ahead to 2032.”
Outgoing party chair Kelvin Lunani urged the delegates to team up with their UDA counterparts to campaign for Ruto’s re-election in their area.
He stated, “By uniting, we amplify our strength; this amalgamation will establish a government in 2027 and thereafter.”
The ANC party effectively approved the transfer of all its assets and liabilities to the UDA party.
