According to a press release, the newly elected chairperson, deputy chairperson, and numerous commissioners of the African Union (AU) Commission have taken office after a handover ceremony Thursday at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital.
On February 15, during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, the chairperson and deputy chairperson were chosen and sworn in.
Following their election and appointment during the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council on February 12, four of the six commissioners were sworn in during the handover ceremony.
The AU Commission chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, vowed to fix institutional issues and place Africa in the world’s architecture.
As he outlined the priority areas, Youssouf emphasized the need to expedite the Second 10-Year Plan of Agenda 2063 in order to meet the expectations of the African populace and to work toward the AU’s financial autonomy in order to lessen reliance on outside funding by investigating creative financing methods.
He also emphasized how important it is to improve cooperation amongst AU institutions and expedite the adoption of institutional reforms in order to overcome structural and administrative obstacles.
