In Kwa Nyunyi village, located in Makueni County, a baby just one day old was discovered alive after being buried.
Upon receiving a tip-off from neighbours, Francis Kaluma, the area assistant chief, instructed the family to exhume the child’s body.
“I was informed that a woman had delivered and buried her baby alive. I went there and demanded to know where the baby was buried. When they exhumed the body, we were shocked to find the child still alive,” Kaluma said.
The baby was quickly taken to Sultan Hamud Hospital for treatment, but unfortunately, the injuries proved fatal, and the baby died on Sunday morning.
The police have arrested the child’s mother and grandmother, and they are now being held at Salama Police Station.
They are waiting for court arraignment to confront charges connected to the baby’s death and the unlawful burial.
The event has sparked concern in the community, with demands to tackle instances of child neglect and abuse. Local officials have pledged to seek justice for the child and have called on residents to report any suspicious behavior related to children’s welfare.
