Regarding Thursday, March 13’s deadly traffic collision along Ngong Road involving a speeding convoy led by President William Ruto, the National Police Service has released a statement.
The accident involving government vehicles that killed a foreign national pedestrian has been the subject of investigations, the police said.
“Following the road traffic accident that occurred today at Adams Arcade along Ngong Road, involving government vehicles and resulting in the death of a pedestrian who is a foreign national, the National Police Service is handling the matter, and investigations have commenced,” said the NPS.
President Ruto’s convoy was traveling from Lang’ata to Kibra for the commissioning of a project when the male victim was reportedly knocked down while trying to cross the congested road.
Other drivers were immediately alerted to the tragedy and hurried to the scene to save the man, only to find that he had already passed away from his wounds.
Residents gathered at the scene to try to identify the victim, who was later covered with a towel, according to social media videos and photos.
Concerns over security procedures and pedestrian safety during the Head of State’s tour were raised by residents who spoke to the media, who disclosed that President Ruto’s motorcade continued to move even after he knocked down the Caucasian guy.
Shortly afterward, a police car pulled up, surrounded the area, and took the body away. The body was reportedly brought to Nairobi City Mortuary, where it is awaiting an autopsy.
Ruto’s trip preparation in Nairobi came under heavy fire after the event, with many criticizing the President’s logistical team’s inefficiency during his brief stay in the capital.
Other instances of goon attacks on Kenyans that resulted in injuries to drivers, passengers, and pedestrians exacerbated this even more. Additional instances of looting and vandalism have only made matters worse.
Muchiri Nyaga, NPS’s Director of Corporate Communication, encouraged the public to report any information to the police so that they can conduct investigations.
Nyaga also urged drivers, pedestrians, and other road users to be extremely cautious and follow traffic laws in order to avoid accidents in the future.
