In his attempt to become the next chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), former prime minister Raila Odinga was defeated.

Moussa Faki, who held office for two terms, was the candidate Raila aimed to replace. Raila would be elected to a four-year term, with the chance to be re-elected for a maximum of two terms or eight.
Djibouti’s Mahmoud Youssouf managed to win with the two thirds margin in the 7th round garnering the required votes of 33 countries.
