According to Bishop Edward Mwai of the Jesus Winner Ministry church in the Roysambu neighborhood of Nairobi, “thugs” were organized by people he knows to protest at the house of prayer on Sunday.
The demonstration, which was organized online using the hashtag #OccupyJesusWinner, is in response to President William Ruto’s offer of Ksh. 20 million on March 2 and an additional Ksh. 100 million for a future church construction fundraiser.
Disgruntled Kenyans were incensed and criticized the clergyman for taking the President’s donation in the face of austerity demands.
A force of police officers was stationed at the compound on Sunday after some internet users threatened to hold a demonstration at the church.
Speaking to churchgoers, Mwai claimed to know the people organizing the scheduled protest and charged them with “using our children” without naming them.
“They were used by people I know well, and some were even sent here today. They will eventually realize that God is present at this altar. The city pastor replied, “May God pardon our children who are being used in this way.”
Here, there are some thugs with Jesus Winner badges. We are a quiet church, so please don’t touch them.
After the gift commitment, he said to his supporters, “I leave it to God; may he forgive them,” indicating that he had forgiven those who had insulted him.
