Martha Karua’s newly established People’s Liberation Party (PLP) has come under fire from President William Ruto for using his name as the primary topic of conversation within the party.
Key political figures, including Karua, Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Jimmy Wanjigi, voiced their resolve to run against and defeat President Ruto in the 2027 elections while continuously denouncing his administration and policies in the wake of the NARC-Kenya’s rebranding to the PLP on Thursday.
Ruto, speaking in Taita Taveta County on Friday, said he was frustrated by what he called “endless discussions” about him and dismissed the PLP’s strategy as a diversion from the important policy changes the Kenya Kwanza government is doing.
Ruto acknowledged Cheptumo’s keen attention on the prosperity of education and stated that the university’s building will be a tribute to the leader and his dedication to enhancing Baringo’s educational capabilities.
“We discussed the University of Baringo’s building with Cheptumo and other county authorities. I want to express my gratitude to all of the leaders who have already agreed, as well as to the public, who have also participated. I have heard that you have all agreed,” he stated.
“With his family here and the rest of you here, I know that this great leader who is laying here will not be able to witness the founding of Baringo University. We will all be present to witness Cheptumo’s dreams and aspirations come true,” he continued.
According to Eldama Ravine MP Musa Sirma, five local MPs decided on Kabarnet town as the site for the proposed Baringo University.
Ruto’s hometown of Sugoi is 90 kilometers away from the university, which takes around two hours to get there.
“We found that Kabarnet town was a perfect location due to the land’s availability, and building the university will aid in the development of the county headquarters,” he stated last month.
Sirma asserts that the university’s building will be essential to drawing in investors and generating employment in the county.
Sirma added that the institution will build satellite campuses around the sub-counties.
President Ruto further said that funding the construction of infrastructure in outlying regions will ensure both national equity and the economic transformation of the regions and the nation as a whole.
