Citing negative effects on public health, the Ministry of Health has reminded the public that Shisha is still prohibited.

A single or multiple stemmed device is used to inhale shitsha, a flavored tobacco smoke that travels through water or another liquid before reaching the smoker.

Mary Muthoni, the principal secretary for health, promised in a statement released Monday to cooperate with pertinent parties in order to take harsh measures against users.

“The Ministry of Health together with other Government Agencies remain committed to enforcing this ban and urges all Kenyans to comply. We also call on law enforcement agencies to strengthen surveillance and take action against those violating this law,” stated PS Muthoni.

The Public Health (Control of Shisha Smoking) Rules’ 2017 ban is the reason for the reminder.

The product was illegal to manufacture, sell, or use in the nation.

PS Muthoni has warned the public to exercise caution after highlighting some of the product’s detrimental effects.

“Shisha smoking poses serious health risks, including respiratory diseases, heart conditions, and exposure to toxic chemicals. We appeal to the public to prioritize their health and that of their loved ones. Prevention is better than cure,” she added.

Both the High Court and the Court of Appeal upheld the ban in December 2024 following a legal challenge to it in 2018.

The justices upheld the restriction, stating that economic interests must yield to public health.

Nonetheless, the product is still readily available and utilized nationwide, primarily at entertainment venues.“Shisha smoking poses serious health risks, including respiratory diseases, heart conditions, and exposure to toxic chemicals.
