After months of intensive searching, Simon Muteti, who was reportedly abducted by unknown individuals last October, has finally been found alive.
On Tuesday morning, Faith Odhiambo, the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), confirmed that Muteti had been located and reunited with his family.
The LSK chief pointed out, however, that even though Muteti was discovered alive, he is still profoundly traumatized by the traumatic experience inflicted on him by his captors.
Simon Muteti is out of detention after more than three months of being held incommunicado. Faith Odhiambo stated, “He is safe with his family but remains petrified by his ordeal.”
As she announced this, Faith Odhiambo promised to guarantee that the victim obtained legal and psychological assistance.
On October 22, 2024, in Timau, Laikipia County, Muteti was allegedly taken by individuals thought to be part of the Special Operations Unit (SOU).
After Muteti’s family contacted LSK for legal assistance, the case regarding his supposed disappearance was publicized by LSK in January of this year.
Another family from Garsen also visited the LSK offices in Nairobi during the same period to report that their relative, who had been detained at Garsen Police Station, went missing on October 5 of the previous year.
LSK states that the two abduction cases demonstrate a worrying trend of enforced disappearances, occurring not just in urban areas such as Nairobi, but nationwide.
Hardly a month after 24-year-old Billy Mwangi and 22-year-old Peter Muteti were found alive following their alleged abduction on December 20 of the previous year, the latest development has occurred.
Billy Mwangi was rescued by a good samaritan who returned him to his relatives, while Peter Muteti was discovered alive in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
Others who were discovered alive on the same day included cartoonist Kibet Bull’s brother, Rony Kiplagat, found in Machakos, and Benard Kavuli, who was located in Kitale.
