The circumstances behind the deadly stabbing of a church elder who was killed by his colleague in a terrifying incident at the altar on Saturday have been made public by a leader in Homa Bay.
Following an incident with another elder, Francis Opiyo, 35, died from fatal injuries sustained in his stomach. A short time later, he turned himself in to the assistant chief.
Since then, Wasamba Sub-Location Assistant Chief Lucas Onyango has spoken out about the incident, stating that shortly after killing Opiyo, the main suspect in the heinous murder was slightly stunned by his own acts.
“I was at home yesterday when my son told me someone was asking for me,” he recounted. “The suspect was quite anxious when he approached me. He informed me that he had been into a fight and injured someone.
He claimed to have scratched Opiyo’s stomach when I asked him who he had wounded. I took him to the police station after he confessed.
Onyango further disclosed that it wasn’t until later at the police station that the suspect learned about Opiyo’s passing.
The sub-chief further disclosed that following a brief argument on how to deliver a sermon, the two church leaders’ brawl intensified.
Since learning that Francis Opiyo did not survive his injuries, angry locals have set fire to the suspect’s home.
According to Suba South Sub-County Police Commander Caxton Ndunda, who confirmed the occurrence, there may have been animosity between the two elders prior to the horrible act.
Stabbing incidents have increased in recent weeks, and a consistent pattern indicates that most victims know who their attackers are.
A church official was arrested in November 2024 after a woman accused him of attempted murder after an altercation in which she was stabbed multiple times and had her hands removed.
