William Kamket, the Member of Parliament for Tiaty, has disclosed that Kenyans who criticize President William Ruto’s administration are being abducted.
The MP disclosed, in what appears to be an admission that the government is kidnapping individuals, that these kidnappings are ‘repercussions and reprisals’ aimed at those demanding the removal of the Ruto administration.
On Friday, February 7, the MP spoke in Baringo County and claimed that Kenyans were resorting to unconstitutional methods in an attempt to bring an end to Ruto’s government, which resulted in the abductions.
Kamket asked, “When you say Ruto must go and want to use unconstitutional means, what do you expect from the state?”
He added, “You expect what we refer to as reprisals; you expect repercussions. The minor sounds you hear regarding certain individuals being arrested and abducted are consequences of attempting to unconstitutionally topple the government.
The MP stated that those who criticize the government deserve to be abducted and arrested for their opposition.
Kenya has seen a rise in abduction cases, leading to significant backlash and claims that such incidents are reminiscent of the country’s dark days.
Data from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) indicates that there have been 13 additional cases of abductions or enforced disappearances in the past three months, raising the total to 82 since June 2024.
Seven abduction cases were reported in December 2024, with six individuals still missing, resulting in a total of 29 people unaccounted for since June 2024.
In spite of the rise in instances of forced disappearance, the security agencies of the country have rejected any involvement in certain cases and asserted that others were arrests rather than abductions.
Police IG Douglas Kanja has repeatedly denied that police are involved in the cases. Public Service CS Justin Muturi recently alleged that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) was responsible for the abductions.
This occurred after the alleged abduction of his son last year. The CS disclosed that he had called the president to request the release of his son. His son was released within an hour after the call.
President William Ruto pledged to Kenyans that his government would put an end to abduction cases.
