TSC Clarifies Reports of Sacking 7,357 JSS Intern Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has clarified claims claims that it has sacked 7,357 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers who engaged in nationwide strike.

TSC has disclosed that the protests, which have been prevalent and have demanded permanent employment, have resulted in the dismissal of only 742 JSS teachers. Intern teachers nationwide initiated these demonstrations on May 13, coinciding with the reopening of schools for the second term.

TSC issued show-cause letters to the instructors who had abandoned their duties on May 22. They were obligated to submit their responses within two weeks.

The Commission has reported that these letters were sent to 10,348 teachers who were absent from work beginning on May 13, 2024, and provide an explanation of their whereabouts.

TSC reported that 9,606 of the 10,348 instructors responded within the two-week timeframe. Of these, 742 instructors failed to report to work or provide adequate explanations, resulting in the termination of their contracts and the hiring of replacements.

This figure accounts for 1.6% of the Commission’s total of 46,000 intern instructors.

TSC has a total of 46,000 teachers in practicum positions throughout the nation. The Commission sent termination letters to these interns on June 6, which were reviewed by The Star.

These letters suggested that numerous educators were terminated for what TSC termed “professional misconduct.”

The All.co.ke obtained the termination letters on Monday, which indicated that the Commission had terminated the internship engagements with effect from June 6, 2024, as a result of the teachers’ professional malfeasance, specifically their desertion from duty on May 13, 2024.

The show-cause letters, which were issued on May 22, 2024, were referenced in the letters. These letters provided the instructors with an opportunity to provide an explanation for why their internships should not be terminated due to professional misconduct.

The Commission emphasized that it had a thorough evaluation of certain responses but found them unsatisfactory, which resulted in the decision to terminate the contracts.
