The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) states that it continues to pursue former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu regarding nearly Ksh. 2 billion in unexplained assets and other corruption charges.
This action follows the High Court’s sentencing of the former Governor to 12 years in prison or a fine of Ksh.52.5 million regarding the Ksh.588 million corruption case. As a result, Waititu will also confront additional charges related to the management of fraudulent tenders amounting to Ksh.50 million.
The commission states that in the first case, Waititu faces charges of fraudulently acquiring Ksh. 1.9 billion of wealth that cannot be accounted for while he was serving as Governor.
“He also traded with the county through companies registered in the names of his wife and their daughter Monica Njeri Ndungu, who upon receipt of payments from the county transferred money to him,” a source at EACC told media.
Consequently, he amassed assets valued at Ksh.1,937,709,376.54, which is not in proportion to his known legitimate income sources during the period from 2015 to 2020.
For the second case concerning corruption amounting to Ksh. 50 million, EACC sent the file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), which has now advised that charges be brought against Waititu.
Following his Samburu counterpart Moses Lenolkulal, Waititu is the second ex-Governor in the country to be convicted.
In total, the commission has brought nine former governors to court, with seven of them facing active cases. This group consists of Dr. Evans Kidero (Nairobi), Mike Sonko (Nairobi), Okoth Obado (Migori), Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia), Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu), and Mwangi Wa Iria (Murangá).
